Modern Broadcasting.

As technology improves and companies budgets become higher, we see a change in the way they broadcast their shows. Not only will a programme be aired on its usual time and day on a regular basis, but we also see how companies such as ITV and BBC have created a number of new channels i.e. ITV2 and BBC2 & 3 to broadcast re-runs of these programmes over and over again. Furthermore, now the Internet is slowly becoming our main source of both information and now broadcast, these companies have created websites whereby viewers can watch their favourite shows whenever they want and as many times as they please. These websites such as ITV Player and Channel 4OD have increased the power society now has on the media by having such a huge choice that enables people to fit entertainment around their lifestyle instead of before new equipment such as the Sky Plus 1 box and these re-run websites whereby society had to fit their life around the TV schedule so their favourite programmes would not be missed. This great deal of control and individuality for society will therefore increase viewings as people are now able to enjoy their shows whenever they want instead of regrettably missing the only showing of Eastenders because they were at work, for instance. Consequently, I feel that broadcast will slowly become bigger on the web and therefore, decrease its broadcasting on TV as society will begin to watch everything over the Internet instead of on their TV.

In terms of my own formats, depending on what channel and due to the large amount of shows broadcasted on the Internet, I feel that it would be very easy to simply upload our TV show onto whichever broadcasting company (hypothetically speaking) owns the format. My radio show however, would rather be saved onto the website of BBC’s radio website, giving the public the option to listen to whenever they want.

Overall, forms of broadcast are constantly changing and improving so I expect to see a new way of watching shows, maybe a new way over the Internet or a completely new device that makes watching your favourite shows even more individual to your lifestyle and easy. For instance, we already see new technologies emerging such as the iPlayer apps on the iPhone, enabling society to watch their favourite shows on the go, not necessarily needing to be at home. Whats going to be the next big thing?
